EME2040 Reflect

This class was a lot harder than the introduction class I had to take before this, and the online class aspect of the course was hard with out a teacher being there right by your side, but professor Coleman has definitely been a wealth of information for me and helping me along this journey of a semester. This class made me realize that I do still have a lot to learn about teaching, like I still need to learn how to make a legit webpage for students and parents to go to when they need information. I need to learn how to navigate better through the internet better and find my own tech tools that I will be able to use in the classroom when I become a teacher, I never knew how much you really had to set up before a classroom to teach. This course gave me a new respect for teachers and for learning and how precious and important it really is. Some of the tech tools that I had researched through the book and looked up on the internet, were actually very useful and I am still trying to learn how to use a few like podcast and the cartoon creators like powtoon because the cartoon creations are a hit or miss for me because sometimes I save them right and sometimes they don't save at all. But overall I had a great experience and this class has been an eyeopener, I learned how to do group projects online which was different but I had great partners and I am really glad I got the chance to learn how to use some of the tech tools that real teachers use.

Chapter 12 #L

Going through chapter twelve tech tool 12.1 is all about tracking technology trends, this means always being up to date about the new technologies coming out like ipads or a new computer system. This tech tool gives websites that follow certain trends through technology that people can follow on a daily basis. One of the websites called The Horizon Project is about the latest educational technologies emerging for example the ebook. Another cool website that is helpful in my opinion that is in the book is, The Scout Project. This website provides newly discovered resources that are useful for educators, it also provides research articles and is free!

Tech tool 12.2 talks about Digital Pens and Digital Notepads. One of the things it talks about is a digital pen, this is a writing device that records writing that someone has written or spoken and can be accessed again on a computer that converts into typed text (Porgue, 2008). Another was the digital notepad this devices allows someone to write and draw then converts those images into digital text! This were really interesting to me and I think I need to invest in one now. This is a video of the digital pen below.

Chapter 6 #K

Chapter 6 is all about using educational applications and computer websites so one of the tech tools 6.1 presents Portaportal, which is a data management utility that brings up key words in your lesson. This website helps you bookmark certain websites that would be useful for a lesson and also organizes your web browser. I like this website because it is free and very organized and useful all in one!
Tech tool 6.2 is also about bookmarking websites and applications. One social bookmarking that I am familiar with is Delicious (www.delicious.com). This website is very useful and I am using it as a bookmarking tool for my web browser. Delicious is also free and easy to use, you can sort your book marks and add them to a Google account along with down loading it to your phone on the go! But if the Delicious account isn't for you then there are many other online bookmarking website out there.

Tech tool 6.3 is about web and app learning for students. Mostly literature is what is on these applications but that is still awesome! There is one website that is call Favorite Poem Project (www.favoritepoem.org) founded by Robert Pinsky. It is videos of students and teachers or anyone, reciting their favorite poems out loud in videos! Poems are all about flow and the way you can express the poems true meanings so I thought this was such a smart idea.

Chapter 11 #J

In chapter eleven, tech tool 11.1, talks about digital portfolio building resources. This is a technology technique that helps teacher stay organized with their work and with their students grades and learning comprehension. This tool seems very interesting to me because having a digital portfolio can be very useful for teachers, business owners, and entrepreneurs! There are many apps that anyone can use not even just teachers!

Tech tool 11.2 talks about survey and poll resources and apps, these are pretty good teaching tools for teachers and students. Teachers can create their own surveys using various websites for their classroom relating to a certain topic. Which I think is awesome, surveys can be fun for anyone! One website talked about in this section is Surveymonkey.com which allows you to create your own survey!

A certain type of learning caught my attention, and that is Teaching with a clicker. I grew up learning from slideshows. Now many teachers are using clicker learning because students can get interactive with learning and with other students. It breaks the ice of being embarrassed to answer a question, and no question is a stupid question. Using this clicker method, it gives teachers instant feedback of what their students know and gives them a somewhat idea on how they will do on a test which is awesome! I would be interested in using this method in my classroom.
This website gives instructions on how to control and work a clicker in your classroom!

Blog #I chapter 4

In chapter 4 there is a Tech tool 4.1 that is used for Lesson Planning, Lesson planning is hard, there are classes at Universities dedicated to lesson planning and creating syllabuses, but in this Tech tool it provides you with multiple websites that are free that teachers and students can use. These are interactive websites that teachers can use for a class lesson. one website that seemed to have it all was Annenberg Learner (www.learner.org), this site provides interactive activities on social studies, science, mathematics, foreign language, literature, language arts, and history. These sections are also broken up into grades.

Tech tool 4.2 is all about Web Resource and Apps for Teaching. One site that caught my attention and seemed to be broad but well put together is the Teaching Channel, it is an online video resource for teachers to provide to students of all grade levels. Some of the video topics are student behavior, assessment strategies, and meeting the Common Core State Standards. This tech tool also provides information on cool applications that help students learn to read, write, do math, take quizzes, etc.

Tech tool 4.3 is a section about Web Resources and Apps for Student Assessment. Online there are websites that quiz students on different subjects. There are also apps that can help teachers grade students work, on their phones or computers or I pads. Grade Pad helps teachers assess a students academic work and calculates the score on a mobile device. I think that is neat because when I was in Elementary school teachers had to calculate your grade with a calculator!

Chapter 9 #H

When I think of schools using technology it leads me to think of robots and science projects, but in reality students are learning more and more by a teacher using technology and teaching the class with multimedia technology. Multimedia technology has been somewhat around since  was in middle school and it is where teachers show videos and interactive classroom games for students to get involved with each other. Multimedia gives students an face-to-face interaction as well as works their brain to get them thinking. Multimedia is also important with online classes.

Digital projectors and document camera are both used in some classrooms, I grew up when teachers were just transitioning into using digital projectors in classrooms. A digital projector is pretty much a projector that has better clarity, color, and allows the teacher to freeze the screen so it stays on one thing while they are explaining a lesson. The document camera shows graphs, pictures, and text to students on a screen. this comes in handy when a teacher is reading a book, but the school cannot afford to buy every student a copy, so the teacher can use to document camera to provide pictures from the book, and the words they are reading to the students.

Video resources are very useful for teachers. There are a lot of positive/informational web programs out there for teachers to use for lessons, such as TeacherTube, and PBS Learning Media. YouTube provides a lot of informational resources for teachers and for students! These video resources provide videos and lesson plans of all subjects and are internet based.

Chapter 10 #G

While reading Chapter 10, there is a specific tech tool talked about in here, that are called interactive whiteboards. Interactive whiteboards engage the whole class with learning words and phrases while to the students it seems like a game! There are some animated parts to the interactive whiteboards where it can teach multiple students and challenges them to go further. So it's fun for them and helps them learn.
whiteboardimage Interactive Whiteboards: Using them in the Music Classroom.
Interactive whiteboards

In chapter 10 there is a concern of special education students in need of learning and using technology, which is very true! Even students with special needs learn how to do school through Interactive whiteboards connecting sounds with pictures! Special needs students are sometimes known as non-verbal so, schools get funding for these buttons that the student presses when they are happy or sad, or when they want something which has proven to help a lot in schools! I know from personal experience because I helped out in a high school special education classroom with non-verbal students and it was amazing how smart they really were but they just couldn't express themselves or what they wanted to say in any other way.

Apps

Visual learning seems to be becoming more common due to technology which is good! Interactive electronic storybooks helps students learn literature on the computer. It combines words and pictures with sounds and effects. This to me almost sounds like a 3D book! Which to me sounds AWESOME. Now these interactive electronic storybooks are so popular in schools that there are applications for them to bring along on your phone.
